Why PAM (Polyacrylamide) Needs Model Selection & Its Importance

1. Why PAM model selection is necessary

  1. PAM has different ionic types with completely different functions

    PAM is divided into Anionic, Cationic, Non-ionic and Amphoteric types, each with different charge properties and applicable scenarios.

  • Anionic PAM: Negative charge, suitable for inorganic wastewater such as sand washing, coal washing, mineral processing and steel industry. Mainly used for flocculation and sedimentation.
  • Cationic PAM: Positive charge, suitable for organic wastewater and sludge from municipal sewage, food, printing & dyeing, biochemical industry. Widely used for sludge dewatering.
  • Non-ionic PAM: Nearly neutral charge, fits acidic, high-salinity and low-turbidity water with wide pH adaptability.
  • Amphoteric PAM: For complex water with high salinity and unstable pH value.
  1. Different technical parameters lead to huge performance gaps
  • Molecular weight: Range from 8 million to 20 million. Higher molecular weight forms larger flocs, but excessive molecular weight causes poor dissolution and sticky residue.
  • Ionic degree: Mainly for cationic PAM (10%–60%). Higher ionic degree brings faster charge neutralization; over-high dosage will increase cost and cause side effects.
  1. No universal PAM for all water & sludge

    Water quality, sludge composition, pH value, turbidity and salt content vary greatly in different industries. There is no one-size-fits-all PAM model.

2. Importance of PAM model selection

  1. Directly determine flocculation, sedimentation and dewatering effect

    Wrong model leads to small flocs, slow settling, turbid outlet water and poor sludge dewatering.

  2. Control production cost

    Proper matched model reduces dosage greatly; wrong model causes excessive consumption and waste of raw materials.

  3. Stable operation of wastewater treatment process

    Correct selection avoids system fluctuation, blocking and equipment adhesion.

  4. Meet discharge standard

    Accurate PAM selection ensures stable outlet water quality and complies with environmental protection discharge regulations.
