Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP): The Core Builder in Detergents
Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP), with the molecular formula Na₅P₃O₁₀, is the core and irreplaceable builder in detergent formulations worldwide. Boasting multifunctional advantages and cost-effectiveness, it remains the preferred choice for detergent manufacturers despite the rising “phosphate-free” trend in some regions.
STPP plays key roles in enhancing detergent performance. It effectively softens hard water by chelating Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions, preventing soap scum and ensuring consistent cleaning results. It also disperses dirt particles to avoid redeposition, emulsifies tough oils synergistically with surfactants, and maintains a stable weakly alkaline environment (pH 9.0–10.5) to optimize cleaning efficiency.
Compared to phosphate-free alternatives like zeolites and citrates, STPP stands out with its all-in-one functionality, higher efficiency, and lower cost. It improves powdered detergent flowability, has excellent compatibility with other additives, and remains irreplaceable in hard water and heavy-duty cleaning scenarios where cost and performance matter most.
