In the textile printing and dyeing industry, sodium pyrophosphate plays two key roles: water softening and color fixing. During the printing and dyeing process, the hardness of water directly affects the dyeing effect. Calcium and magnesium ions in hard water will combine with dyes, leading to uneven dyeing, dull color, and even color spots.
Sodium pyrophosphate can remove calcium and magnesium ions in water through chelation, soften the water quality, and provide a stable water environment for printing and dyeing. This ensures the uniform dispersion of dyes, improving the color brightness and color fastness of dyed fabrics.
In the fabric pre-treatment process, sodium pyrophosphate can be used as a scouring assistant to help remove impurities, oils and waxes on the fabric, improve the water absorption and whiteness of the fabric, and lay a good foundation for subsequent dyeing and printing processes.
In the color fixing link, it can combine with dye molecules and fabric fibers, enhance the adhesion between dyes and fibers, reduce dye shedding, and improve the washing fastness and rub fastness of fabrics.
In addition, sodium pyrophosphate can also be used to adjust the pH value of the printing and dyeing solution, stabilize the printing and dyeing system, and avoid the impact of pH value fluctuation on the dyeing quality.

Application Cases in Textile Printing and Dyeing Industry

Case 1: Reactive Dyeing of Cotton Blended Fabrics. A printing and dyeing enterprise used sodium pyrophosphate as a water softener and pH regulator in the reactive dyeing process of cotton blended fabrics. By chelating calcium and magnesium ions in hard water, it prevented the formation of color spots and uneven dyeing caused by the combination of metal ions and dyes. At the same time, it stabilized the pH value of the dye bath at 4-6, improved the affinity between dyes and fibers, made the dyed fabrics have bright colors, and the washing fastness and rub fastness were increased by 1-2 levels, effectively reducing dye shedding during use.
